Our Story
Club Oxley’s story stretches back more than half a century, rooted in a suburb with deep community spirit and a long history of resilience. Oxley has always been a place shaped by connection, from its early days as farmland and small local enterprises in the 1800s to the establishment of key community organisations throughout the 1900s.
The Oxley Bowls Club itself was founded in 1967, joining the local golf club, progress association and other community groups that helped define the area’s identity. Over the decades, the club became a gathering place for sport, friendship and neighbourhood life.
But like much of Oxley, it has also weathered hardship. The suburb has faced multiple major flood events, including the devastating Brisbane floods of 2011 and 2022, which saw homes, businesses and community facilities inundated. In 2022, Oxley was one of several bowls clubs across Queensland severely affected, with floodwaters damaging greens, clubhouses and equipment. Recovery depended heavily on volunteers, locals who stepped in with gloves, brooms, food, and sheer determination to help rebuild what had been lost.
That spirit of community support is the heart of Club Oxley today. The club’s evolution, from its foundation in the 1960s to its modern revival, has been driven not by paid staff, but by everyday people who care deeply about preserving a place for sport, connection and belonging. After each flood, volunteers rallied again, proving what locals often say: “That’s the Oxley way, they’ve been through this before. They know exactly what to do.”
Today, Club Oxley continues to grow through the dedication of its committee and volunteers, the same spirit that carried the club through one of its hardest chapters. The 2022 Brisbane floods almost destroyed the club, leaving the greens damaged, the building impacted, and the future uncertain. For a time, it wasn’t clear whether the doors would ever open again.
But the community refused to let Club Oxley disappear. Volunteers stepped in once more, cleaning, repairing, fundraising, and rebuilding piece by piece. Their perseverance is bringing the club back to life, transforming a near‑loss into a fresh start.
Now, we’re focused on reinvigorating the club, modernising our spaces, expanding community activities, and rebuilding membership. Every improvement, every event, every open night is powered by locals who believe in what this club means to Oxley.
The committee’s role is to honour that history, protect the club’s future, and keep strengthening a place rebuilt by resilience and community pride.
